Creative Day – Ferrari 458

Well it’s that time again where our team get to let there hair down and flex their creative muscles. This time we wanted to fulfill a childhood dream and get up close and personal with a beautiful Italian… sports car. The Ferrari 458 is a marvel of design and engineering and what better car to shoot for one of our creative days.

When we started looking for a car to shoot, we were somewhat naive to think that we could easily get access to a $600 thousands dollar super car, our optimism soon turned to hope, then prayer, then grovelling. After exhausting all avenues, we got an email out of the blue from a Ferrari 458 owner who was happy to help out. The team sat down and designed shots, locations and scenarios for each of our concepts to get the angles and perspective right in the studio.

We dusted off our public liability insurance, booked the studio and spent the first hour of the shoot giggling like a bunch of school girls at the end of year dance. Hearing the car roar to life when we started the engine was an experience in itself, somewhat different then the 4cyl go-go mobile we’re used to. The Ferrari 458 was quite a tricky car to light, the contour of the body panels meant Ashley and Hormuzd needed time to study the car in detail. We teamed up with talented video production friends Ramon Piracha and Lachlan Fletcher (Studio 18a) to shoot behind the scenes video on the day.

On Location

Once we had the assets of the car, the next step was to shoot the backgrounds, this meant getting up at 4:00 am and heading into Brisbane city to shoot the Story Bridge at first light. The next location was a remote road along a water reservoir in Esk south west of Brisbane, it was a little more tricky as we could not simply stop off on the side of the road and setup a tripod. Ashley and Hormuzd devised a way to mount the camera to the front of our van, then by doing many laps of the road until they got background asset needed.

Final Concepts

For each concept we wanted to create a different look and feel, not only to challenge us technically but to create images that captured the essence of the car, the excitement and lifestyle. Technically this was a big undertaking, each image took days in photoshop to blend, render and embed the car into each scene.

The red 458 image was created as more of a static product image that places more emphasis on the car. The inspiration for the background came from a few different sources, it was done by blending together multiple image assets and digitally illustrating key elements to create a very unique interior space.

For the yellow 458, we set out to capture the sensation of speed and freedom when driving down an empty open road in a exotic super car. It was quite a difficult concept to combine the lighting, placement of vehicle, negative space and the visual contrast to match the car. Once again the background was created from multiple image assets that were blended together painstakingly to produce this very unique stretch of road.

In the final 458 concept our goal was to create an image that captured the pure joy of driving a Ferrari. We wanted the background to compliment the vehicle and needed to strip the cityscape down to it’s bear minimum, so as not to overshadow the car.

It was a fantastic Creative Day and one that allowed us to live out our childhood dream. A big thank you to the car owner, we really appreciate it.

Hormazd took this screen shot after feeling somewhat overwhelmed at the 5357 images he needed to sort through after our event photography shoot for the Urban Country Music Festival. After three days of shooting, it took 8 hours to simply go through and select the images for final post production. A small glimpse at the not so glamorous life of a post production artist. 10 points if you can see where he was up to!

Commercial Photographers Shoot: QCCU Mt Isa

Our photography team had a great opportunity to travel to Mt Isa in central Queensland to shoot a series of corporate portraits and advertising photography for Queensland Country Credit Union. Shooting on location can be quite a challenge, it usually means getting up before the sun rises and shooting through to after it sets. This makes for some very long days, but the results far out way the exhaustion when you come back with great images.

Mt Isa was a fantastic location that really lent itself to shooting environmental portraiture. We sat down with QCCU’s marketing department and came up with art direction and shot concepts that would help communicate the key message of getting back to where it all begun for their 40th anniversary. So our aim was to capture the board members on location with Mt Isa in the background instead of the usual studio portraits that get produced due to time constraints and availability. During the initial location scout we found an amazing spot overlooking the town and mines that would be a perfect backdrop for the board portraits. If you have ever worked with board members before you will know that having their portraits taken is the equivalent of pulling teeth at the dentist, so we needed to make sure that the location, lighting and our team were ready to go as soon as the board arrived.

The second part of the brief was to shoot a series of advertising portraits of four local members and the branch managers. We spent a full day location scouting and shot planning to get the right look for this aspect of the portfolio. The direction we decided on was a more natural feel to help tie in with QCCU’s target market and brand identity. The miners portrait was shot using only the torches on our helmets, it was so dark down there that when you turned your torch off you could not even see your hand in front of your face, it was quite a disorientating experience. For the branch managers we found a great location just out of town, the contrasting landscape from the deep brown of the rocky soil in the foreground through to the open green hills and deep blue sky in the background really accentuated the remote country feel we were after. Commercial Photographers Turn Story Bridge Blue

It’s not every day you get to see our beloved Story Bridge turn blue. Check out the gallery from this shoot.

We sent our commercial photographers to AEIOU, a charity that provides early intervention and education for children with autism. April marks Autism Awareness month and to help celebrate both the month and also International Autism Awareness Day (on 2 April) they changed the lighting of Brisbane’s Story Bridge Blue. Would you pay $4.3 million for this photo?

On November 8th 2011 a new record was broken for the most expensive photo to be sold at auction, unfortunately it was not one of ours. German artist Andreas Gursky, sold his photograph of the Rhine River at Christies Auction house in New York for a staggering $4.3m.

I know what you are thinking? I could have shot that, and your probably right, it’s not what you would expect for $4.3 million dollars. If you told me that it was an Ansel Adams original photograph then it’s totally understandable, he was a very iconic black and white landscape photographers in early to mid 1900′s. However to pay such a staggering amount of money for an image that could easily be created by any prosumer with an SLR and some photoshop skills is somewhat of a mystery. In recent years there has been an increased demand for photographic art pieces and the prices people are willing to pay for them.

Have a look at the images below, this self portrait of Cindy Sherman in 1981 titled “Untitled #96″ is the second most expensive photograph selling at auction for $3,890,500 in May 2011. The third most expensive was another of Andreas Gursky’s titled “99 Cent II Diptychon” which sold for $3.35 million in 2006. So what makes these images worth millions? Is it their minimalist qualities? Subject matter? The name of the artist? Or is it simply what someone is willing to pay for them? Nonetheless one thing is for sure they are laughing all the way to the bank and will probably take a photo in the process and sell it for more money.

We have been working very hard over the past 8 months to redesign and update every aspect of the iRelease iPhone App, created a new digital model release form website and built better online management tools. Our goal was to create a total solution that would seamlessly integrate with your workflow and not just another iPhone, iPad application. We were really excited to see it finally go live and to here the great feed back.

Creative Days – Casey Barnes

We kicked off our first Creative Day of 2011 in style, teaming up with 2010 Australian Idol finalist and friend Casey Barnes to shoot a series of advertising portraits in the Sunshine Coast pine forests. Take a look at the behind the scenes video produced by Studio 18a.

So what are Creative Days? Through out the year any spare minute we have goes into our own personal work, or as we like to call them “Creative Days”. We shoot a series of projects on topics that inspire us, push us creatively or will make a positive difference in the world. So to start off 2011 we wanted to shoot a series of creative portraits, after a few months of planning, location scouting and shot designing our team headed out to the Sunshine Coast pine forest for some fun.

Apart from the swarms of armor piecing mosquito’s and getting lost in a pitch black forest at night, the whole shoot was amazing and we now holding our breath for the next one. As a special treat we team up with Lachlan Fletcher from Studio 18a, one of Brisbane’s best video production studios to create an amazing behind the scenes video of the day. A big thank you to Casey Barnes, Tamika Hudson (make up artist) and Lachlan Fletcher for making the day such a success. Time Lapse – What Lies Beneath!

Have you ever wondered what goes on under Brisbane whilst you work and sleep? Our time-lapse photographers have just completed an amazing time lapse movie for Airport Link to show the massive Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) cutting its way through the caverns. The footage even made it on to the news! Read the full story below.In April 2011 we installed a time lapse camera in the Kedron tunnel to capture the TBM working its way through to its final destination. The custom built time lapse system needed to be almost bomb proof to keep out all the fine dust and other environmental factors, after all we only got one chance to capture the sequence. Using an elevated work platform we mounted the camera to the roof of the tunnel which gave us the best view of the TBM coming towards the camera and then flipping it around to show the sheer size of the machine as it moved its way through the cavern. Time Lapse – The Mountain

It’s a great feeling when you stumble across a piece of work that leaves a lasting impression and inspires you to do great things. Hormazd found this amazing time lapse movie that was captured during a week expedition to Spain’s highest mountain El Teide

The Film was captured between 4th and 11th April 2011 by Terje Sorgjerd, he spent a grueling week hiking up and around Spain’s Mount EL Tiede. The goal was to capture the beautiful Milky Way galaxy along with one of the most amazing mountains. A large sandstorm hit the Sahara Desert on the 9th April (bit.ly/g3tsDW) and at approx 3am in the night the sandstorm hit Terje, making it nearly impossible to see the sky with his own eyes.

Interestingly enough his Canon 5dmk2 was set for a 5 hour sequence of the milky way during this time and he was sure his whole scene was ruined. Fortunately Terje managed to capture an amazing sequence with the sandstorm backlit by Grand Canary Island making it look like golden clouds. The Milky Way was shining through the clouds, making the stars sparkle in an interesting way. So if you ever wondered how the Milky Way would look through a Sahara sandstorm, look at 00:32.

Rewind – Top Picks of 2010

It’s been an amazing year for Fullframe, we have traveled around Australia working on some big projects, met inspiring people, successfully launched our iPhone application “iRelease”, created a new website and blog, but best of all we have had lots of fun along the way. We look back at our favourite images captured during the year and share our thoughts and experiences that went into creating each Image.

Gravity

This image won silver at the International Aperture Awards this years and placed us twentieth in the top fifty commercial/advertising images worldwide. It’s funny, we only shot this for fun and to try something a little different. It has given us plenty of great ideas for next years awards, but you will just have to wait and see what we have in store. The man featured in this images is a good friend of ours, we were looking for anyone who would be crazy enough to allow us to harness them up and suspend them from the studio ceiling. The idea behind this image was to explore the concept, what would happen if gravity was suddenly switched off? This was going to be part of a boardroom scene we were planning, unfortunately with a very limited timeframe we had to put that on the back burner. Zoom Zoom

This great image of the Porsche was shot as part of an advertising shoot for a chain of car washes. Being that we are all car lovers, this was one of those opportunities that we simply jumped at. Ashley and Hormazd spent an hour preparing the scene, watering down the concrete and setting up lights before creating this great image. Next time it will have to be a Ferrari…

Guide Dogs Queensland

This year we had the privilege to shoot the marketing and advertising material for the Guide Dogs Queensland’s 50th Anniversary. During one of our location shoots we got word that a litter of puppies had just been born which provided us with a perfect opportunity. This shot was captured inside the breeding centre at Guide Dogs Queensland, as the puppy was only a few hours old we had to be very careful not to stress him out. We wanted a set of strong, rugged hands to contrast against the beautiful soft puppy, since we are creatives and have soft girly hands, we organised for the electrician who happened to be there on the day. Using a blackout cloth and a soft lighting source directly above, we setup a make shift studio to capture this beautiful image. It made our top ten this year simply because we really liked how soft and vulnerable the puppy looked in the frame contrasting against the strong hands and the way his little paw was resting over the hand models thumb.

XXXX Alehouse

This image was shot for the XXXX Alehouse, the project was to create advertising image to promote the Alehouse as a wedding venue (every blokes dream…). The models did a great job, especially as they were staff and not professionals. Click here to take a look behind the scenes from this photo shoot.

The Boxer

This shot is definitely worthy of a top ten spot, not just for the quality and strength of the image, but the unforgettable experience we had working with David Turner. We were commissioned by EGR to shoot some location portraiture and training shots of David, a retired Australian boxing champion. This is our favourite image from the series, it was created by using one light source directly above David’s head, the harsh lighting really helped accentuate his raw strength and power. Curragh Mine

As part of our travels this year we headed up to a large coal mine in central Queensland. What we really enjoy about shooting in these rugged areas is the subject rich environments, they are the perfect backdrop for great location portraits. This image was shot for WorkPac as part of their marketing and branding, we really like the sense of scale in the image. The large crane in the background is absolutely massive, to give you an idea

BMD Townsville Aerial

Anytime we get a chance to go up in a helicopter is a good thing, this image was shot for BMD in North Queensland. The focus of the shoot was to capture the new residential estate in the bottom left of the frame. Just as we approached the location, the beautiful warm afternoon sun burst through the clouds and lit up the estate perfectly, we could not have asked for a more perfect moment.

Guide Dogs Calendar

This was one of our favourite projects of the year, we were commissioned to create images for the 2011 Guide Dogs Calendar. The creative team sat down and came up with shot concepts and locations for each month. The goal this year was to inject some emotion in to calendar and take it away from a typical dog breeders art direction. Due to a very limited time frame most of the shots were captured at Ashley’s house, for one of the images we actually had to assemble his bed in the lounge room so we could get the natural light from the large windows. Out of all the images we created, this was our favourite, Dudley was such a beautiful dog. The concept for this images was to have Dudley casually relaxing as if it was a lazy Sunday afternoon. It took some work to get him to relax and look straight at the camera, we only found out afterwards that the dogs are trained not to be on the couch. Nestle

Last but not least is this great location portrait shot for Nestle. It was captured at the Nescafe factory in Gympie Queensland. What we really like about shooting with nestle is the creative freedom they give to find great locations and shoot strong portraiture. One experience we will never forget about this shoot is the quality control tasting room, it was comprised of people slurping coffee from a spoons and spitting it out into a bucket, the sound still haunts us to this day

We have kept a few cards up our sleeves for next year, I can’t give too much away but rest assured that 2011 will be inspired!
